Dr Maria MontessoriDr Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was Italy's first female medical graduate, distinguishing herself by securing an honours double degree as Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Surgery. She also had an intense, passionate interest in the development of young children. In 1907 Dr Montessori opened the first institution for children below the age of six, which she called Casa dei Bambini (Children's House).
