DESCRIPTION:Practical Life\nWe invite parents to join us for a discussion and presentation on practical life\, which is a term that encompasses ‘domestic’ work to maintain the home and classroom environment\, self-care and personal hygiene\, and grace and courtesy.\nPractical life skills are of great interest to young children and form the basis of later abstract learning. In addition\, this type of work assists with gross and fine motor skill development as indirect preparation for later learning\, muscle development\, hand-eye coordination\, and so forth. \nYoung children in Montessori classrooms learn to take care of themselves and their environment through activities such as hand washing\, dusting\, mopping\, hammering\, and woodworking. These activities help toddlers and preschool-age children learn to work independently\, develop concentration\, and prepare for later work with reading and math\, while older children participate in more advanced activities such as cooking\, gardening\, operating a business. \nWe do not teach the children these things [practical life activities] to make little servants of them\, but because we have observed that of their own accord children actually take the greatest interest in perfecting all the movements of daily life. ” \n– Dr Maria Montessori\n\nPlease note that this event is for parents only as we seek to engage in meaningful discussions with our attendees.\nBooking your spot now!\nRSVP \n

DESCRIPTION:Socratic Seminar Discussion Night\nA Socratic Seminar is a way of achieving a layered and deeper understanding of a text by way of discussion. Different to a debate\, participants are not competing\, but work together using Socrates’ method of open-ended questions\, to construct meaning. As the name suggests\, a Socratic Seminar is not a method introduced by Montessori; however\, it is widely used in Montessori adolescent programs around the world as it is so well aligned with the Montessori philosophy of education. \nMontessori says:\n“It seems that the capacity of really understanding is connected with discussion\, with criticism\, or with assent of others. The satisfaction of knowing must be immediately communicated to others\, and in this communication enthusiasm increases. True study and thinking require the same association as is required by manual work.” – Maria Montessori\, From Childhood to Adolescence\, Appendix C\, p. 88-89. \nWe would like to share the mechanisms of this valuable method with you\, and explain the framework through participation. Socratic Seminar can be used for all subject areas or ethical questions\, and the ‘text’ can be a visual\, an article\, a problem or a piece of music. DESCRIPTION:You are invited to attend the Lower Secondary Class Curriculum Exhibition for Term 2\, 2021.\nThe Curriculum Exhibition will be held in the new lower secondary space and all our lower secondary students will be exhibiting their work\, from a choice of at least two of their curriculum areas.\nThe Curriculum Exhibition is a platform for students to exhibit their work and processes involved. This format recognises the importance for adolescent students to share their work with and expressing their thoughts to a broader community\, and it gives the process meaning and by responding to questions and explaining the methodology used\, learning is consolidated. \nSupport of the students in this plane of development is vital to help them feel a connection to the community and give them a sense of valorisation. \nThere will be coffee and baked delights available\, as well as a stall of handmade materials. \nEveryone in our school community is invited to attend\, from our primary students to grandparents and other extended family members.\nWe look forward to seeing you! \nBooking is essential! \nRSVP

DESCRIPTION:We are having a Pyjama Day to fundraise for young homeless people.\nOne of our upper primary students has organised this fundraiser for Youth Futures\, which is a charity that supports young homeless people in Perth. Youth Futures has programs such as homeless shelters\, education programs\, as well as the Nest\, which is a support centre for young homeless mothers. \nOn the day\, our students\, and staff (parents too if they’re keen) will wear their pyjamas in exchange for gold coin donations. Of course\, people who don’t want to wear their pyjamas can still donate to this amazing charity.\nAll profits will be donated to Youth Futures\, and your money will be spent on necessary products\, such as food\, toothbrushes\, clothes\, and sanitary items. \nBreakfast: 8:00am to 9:00am!\nIn addition\, our International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme students will be hosting a community breakfast\, for our students\, staff and parents.
