Preparing Year 10 students for success in the International Baccalaureate with a strong foundation in Montessori principles.

The Pre-International Baccalaureate Programme (PIBP) offers a vital transition year for our Year 10 students as they move from the Lower Secondary environment into the International Baccalaureate (IB) pathway, whether they choose the Diploma Programme (IBDP) or the Career-related Programme (IBCP).

The PIBP is thoughtfully designed to bridge the Montessori approach of adolescence with the rigorous, inquiry-based learning of the IB. Rooted in Montessori principles — such as individualised learning, independence, and deep engagement — the programme also cultivates the attributes of the IB Learner Profile, nurturing students to become inquirers, thinkers, balanced, and caring.

Throughout the PIBP year, students benefit from a rich and varied experience that supports both personal growth and academic readiness:

  • Curriculum: Students follow the Western Australian Curriculum for Year 10 alongside the Montessori National Curriculum, ensuring a balance between state-based academic expectations and the Montessori emphasis on holistic development.
  • Specialist teaching: Many classes are led by our IB specialist teachers, providing students with early exposure to the IB teaching style and expectations.
  • Community connection: Students participate in shared activities with both the Lower Secondary and IB groups, including incursions, various Theory of Knowledge or Creativity, Activity and Service events.
  • Career exploration: To support future planning, PIBP students engage in study and career exploration activities, including TAFE taster incursions, guest speakers, and other vocational information excursions.
  • Shared environment: PIBP students learn and socialise in our Upper Secondary Building, sharing common spaces with Year 11 and Year 12 IB students. This proximity fosters a sense of belonging, mentorship, and aspiration.

The PIBP year is more than just preparation for future studies — it is a dynamic and enriching stage of the Montessori journey. It provides students with the academic foundations, independent study skills, and self-awareness they need to confidently step into the challenges and opportunities of the IB Diploma or Career-related Programme, and beyond.
